Objective: Students will analyze text and describe the characters in Chapter 1-2.
Lord Henry Wotton:
1. How is he a manipulator and initiator? He is a manipulator because he is able to influence all of his friends and anyone who soon becomes his friend. His voice is inviting and intriguing as well so he's listened to as is able to take advantage when he pleases.
2. What kind of cigarettes does he smoke? Is this a hint of a decadent lifestyle?
3. How is he cynical?
Basil Hallward:
1. What is his reaction to his painting of Dorian Gray? He loves the painting and does not want to part with it.
2. How has he violated the code of an artist according to Wilde's preface? He has created a piece of art for himself. For his own satisfaction.
3. He obviously sees in Dorian absolute beauty and harmony. Identify where in the passages.
4. What is the main conflict in this paragraph? The main conflict is that he is a man who is in love with a painting of a man.
Research and Correlate the allusions with traits and circumstances surrounding Dorian Gray:
Adonis: A beautiful youth loved by Aphrodite and Persephone.
Aphrodite: the Goddess of Love, Desire and Beauty.
Narcissus: a bulbous Eurasian plant.

What will be Lord Henry's influence on Dorian Gray? Lord Henry will influence Dorian Gray because he will continue to speak to Dorian in his intriguing way and become good friends with Dorian and then without warning, stab him in the back.

paradox- a statement or proposition that leads to a conclusion that seems senseless.
caprice- a sudden change of mood or behavior.
panegyric- a public speech or published text in praise of someone or something.

fidelity- faithfulness to a person, cause, or belief, demonstrated by continuing loyalty and support.
physiology- the branch of biology that deals with normal functions of living organism or bodily part functions.
Analyze the symbolism of Dorian Gray's first appearance in the novel and let's discuss his physical description, his actions towards Basil, and the change in him when Lord Henry arrives.

Examine the interaction between Lord Henry and Dorian. Dorian and Lord Henry interact like they've been friends for a long time because Dorian gets so caught up in everything that Lord Henry says.
Cause and Effect: What is Dorian's response to his finished portrait? Dorian
Compare and contrast: Basil and Lord Henry and identify their conflict. Basil and Lord Henry both are in a sense fighting for the attention of Dorian.
Research and Correlate the allusions with Dorian Gray:
Hermes: the son of Zeus and Maia, the messenger of gods, and god of merchants.
Faun: one of a class of lustful rural gods, represented as a man with a goats horns, ears, legs and tail.

How will Dorian's friendship with Lord Henry change his relationship with Basil?
I think that Lord Henry will make Dorian think that Basil is in love with him. He will tell Dorian that Basil is obsessed and cause Dorian to not want to befriend Basil any longer. Also, Lord Henry and Dorian will become good friends and Dorian will have no more time for Basil and his art work.
